TÜV functional safety certificate for COMBIVERT P6

– Pitch drives in wind turbines –

The COMBIVERT P6 pitch drive system has been developed specifically for use in the hub of wind turbines to adjust the rotor blades according to varying wind conditions. Additionally, the pitch inverter serves to quickly turn the rotor blades out of the wind in case of a fault in the turbine or in the supply grid, in order to protect the wind turbine against dangerous overspeed. The KEB COMBIVERT P6 pitch inverter is therefore an important part of the wind turbine's safety system.

TÜV Rheinland has now awarded a functional safety certificate, which confirms that this safety run meets the requirements for Performance Level d according to EN ISO 13849-1, based on a pitch system comprising three KEB COMBIVERT P6 inverters. The KEB COMBIVERT P6 also meets the requirements of the GL Guideline for the Certification of Wind Turbines (2010) – an essential prerequisite for the broader use of the product on the European market.

The COMBIVERT P6 is currently the only pitch inverter on the world market which combines the fundamental components inverter, battery charger for energy storage and full-fledged PLC in a single compact unit. Furthermore, the P6 is available for six different fieldbus systems (CANopen, PROFIBUS, INTERBUS, EtherCAT, PROFINET and POWERLINK) that connect to the main controller, without the need for additional external components. This simplifies installation for the client and reduces potential sources of error.

This concept makes the P6 flexible and adaptable to a wide range of client requirements, while still enabling the client to safeguard his own expertise.

Other advantages of the P6 include its wide temperature range (-30 ... +70°C) and its high vibration resistance, which make the robust drive attractive for other applications aside from wind power as well.
